Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set and maintain cutting formes and strippers, and proof the forme.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Cut cutting forme wood | 1.1 Bridge holes are accurately drilled 1.2 Saw cuts accurately match line drawing on cutting forme blank 1.3 Holes are reinforced and in register with fixing screws 1.4 Knives and creasers are cut and shaped accurately to suit cutting forme |
2. Prepare knives, creasers and cutting forme rubbers | 2.1 Knives and creasers are set accurately into place on cutting forme blank 2.2 Rubber is located on cutting forme to eject product and waste as required |
3. Set stripping material | 3.1 Stripping materials are attached securely and accurately to stripper backing material 3.2 Mounting strips are correctly fixed |
4. Proof cutting forme | 4.1 Sample meets production order specifications 4.2 Cutting forme is adjusted or re-cut if required |
5. Maintain cutting forme and stripper | 5.1 Correct number is allocated to cutting formes/strippers and recorded as per enterprise procedures 5.2 Cutting forme machine is cleaned according to work health and safety requirements and enterprise procedures 5.3 Problems are accurately described to supervisor or maintenance department 5.4 Status of cutting formes/strippers is reported correctly and without delay to production |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
correctly prepare TWO cutting formes (one large, one small) to accommodate TWO different, typically used substrates using all relevant processes according to manufacturer’s and job specifications, enterprise procedures and listed performance criteria.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
identify work health and safety factors for:
setting knives
cleaning the machine
list checks made to correctly position bridge holes
explain reinforcing bridge holes
identify checks to ensure saw cuts accurately match the line drawings
list checks made when cutting and shaping knives and creasers
list factors that determine the amount of rubber attached to the forme
list factors that determine positioning of the rubber on the forme
list important items to consider when setting knives and creasers into position on the forme blank
list checks required when attaching stripping materials to stripper backing materials and determine how this is done accurately
explain the purpose of mounting strips
identify areas to proof to ensure the cutting forme meets production order specifications
explain the importance of allocating numbers to each forme, and the accepted method of recording forme allocation numbers
identify areas of the machine that need regular cleaning, materials that need to be cleaned from the machine, and how to keep the machine clear of surface rust (condensation)
list recommended cleaning agents applicable to the cutting forme machine
identify how to record and report machine maintenance problems
identify indicators that the machine is in need of oiling/greasing
explain the importance of monitoring condition of the forme and stripper, and information to record when reporting the condition status
identify machine manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, where they are kept, and the information included in them.
Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the converting, binding and finishing field of work and include access to relevant facilities, special purpose tools, equipment and materials.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Reading | 4.1 | Recognises and interprets text and diagrams to establish job requirements from information contained within relevant procedures and specifications |
Writing | 5.1, 5.4 | Records data according to enterprise procedures Uses appropriate vocabulary to report on job status |
Oral Communication | 5.3, 5.4 | Speaks clearly using appropriate vocabulary, tone and pace to report job status or faults to supervisors or colleagues |
Numeracy | 1.2, | Identifies and comprehends relevant mathematical information in familiar diagrams and text |
Navigate the world of work | 5.2 | Takes personal responsibility for adherence to legal/regulatory and safety responsibilities relevant to own work context |
Interact with others | 5.3, 5.4 | Initiates and contributes to a range of formal and informal conversations relevant to role, responding, explaining, clarifying and expanding on ideas and information immediately |
Get the work done | 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2 | Sequences and schedules complex activities and monitors implementation Recognises and anticipates an increasing range of familiar problems, their symptoms and causes |
